Diamond Glossary

The knowledge and more information you have the better diamond purchase you will make. Here are a number of diamond terms that are used by jewelers to describe diamonds and which appear on diamond grading reports.

U:

Ultrasonic Cleaner:
A machine commonly used by jewelers to clean jewelry effectively. The ultrasonic vibrations free most types of dirt, grime, and oils from the items. Some ultrasonic cleaners come with a heating unit. When using this type of cleaner, extreme care is recommended because certain gems cannot withstand the heat and vibration. Consult your professional jeweler.

Ultraviolet Light:
Light that is invisible to the naked eye because it consists of wavelengths shorter than those of visible light.

Ultraviolet:
Lower end of the light spectrum which is invisible to the human eye and allows fluorescence to be visible in a diamond.

Upper Girdle Facet:
Triangular facets located on the lower part of the bezel, right above the girdle.

V:

Very Slightly Imperfect:
A diamond-imperfection grade between very, very slightly imperfect and slightly imperfect. As used ethically, this grade includes stones that are lightly flawed, with flaws easily located but not obvious under 10X.

Vs or Very Slightly Imperfect:
A diamond-imperfection grade between very, very slightly imperfect and slightly imperfect. As used ethically, this grade includes stones that are lightly flawed, with flaws easily located but not obvious under 10X.

Very, Very Slightly Imperfect:
The imperfection grade that is immediately below flawless, or perfect. Ethically employed, this term is applied to stones with minute surface or internal blemishes that are difficult to locate under 10X by a trained eye.

Vvs or Very, Very Slightly Imperfect:
The imperfection grade that is immediately below flawless, or perfect. Ethically employed, this term is applied to stones with minute surface or internal blemishes that are difficult to locate under 10X by a trained eye.

Vermeil:
Silver overlaid with gold (gold-plated silver).

W:

Well cut:
Well cut proportions ensure the maximum compromise between fire and brilliance. When light enters a properly cut diamond, it is reflected from facet to facet, and then back up through the top, exhibiting maximum brilliance, fire and sparkle. White Gold:
An alloy of yellow gold that has silver, zinc, or platinum as a whitening agent.

Wavy Girdle:
A girdle which has been improperly polished and does not run evenly.

Weight:
Diamond weight is measured in carats, subdivided in grains and points.

Well Made:
A well proportioned, polished diamond with a good finish.

White:
A term used to describe the diamonds that are H color and up.

Yellow Gold :
The natural color of pure gold as well as the color of karat gold when alloyed with certain metals.

Zirconium:
Zr is a natural occurring metal. Synthesized in crystal form, also called cubic zirconium
