Diamond Glossary
The knowledge and more information you have the better diamond purchase you will make. Here are a number of diamond terms that are used by jewelers to describe diamonds and which appear on diamond grading reports.

Oval Cut:
A type of fancy shape diamond which is essentially an elongated version of a round cut. A brilliant style of cutting in which the girdle outline is elliptical; i.e., a rounded oblong. Also called the oval brilliant cut.
Off-Make:
A poorly proportioned Diamond.
Old European Cut:
Early round cut similar to the Round Brilliant Cut, but carrying a very small table and heavy crown. Not as popular today because it does not return the same brilliance as the modern brilliant.
Off-center Culet:
A culet that, due to differences in the angles of the opposite pavilion facets, is off center with respect to the girdle outline. It usually results from repairing or repolishing a portion of the pavilion or from attempting to retain maximum weight from a distorted piece of rough.
Old-mine Cut:
An early form of brilliant cut with a nearly square girdle outline. Incorrectly applied to a somewhat more modern style of brilliant cut that also has a much higher crown and smaller table than the modern brilliant cut, but whose girdle outline is circular or approximately circular a style of cutting that is more properly called a lumpy stone or and old-European cut.
Open Table:
A term that is sometimes used to refer to the table on a spread, or swindled, diamond. To some, any table diameter of 60% or more of the girdle diameter is open; to others, open means 65% or more.
Opaque:
A term referring to the transparency of a gemstone; opaque materials do not transmit light.
Orient:
The soft iridescent glow on or just below the surface of a pearl or cultured pearl. It is caused by the interference and diffraction of light from the minute crystals comprising the pearl's nacre.
Open Table:
A term that is sometimes used to refer to the table on a spread, or swindled, diamond. To some, any table diameter of 60% or more of the girdle diameter is open; to others, open means 65% or more.
Old European Cut Diamond:
The earliest known form of brilliant cut diamond with a very small table, heavy crown and large depth.
