H:

Heart-shape Cut:
A type of fancy diamond cut, which is cut to resemble the popular Valentine's Day shape.

Hue:
Pure, spectral (prismatic) color. Hues include gradations and mixtures of red, organdy, yellow, green, blue, violet and purple.

Hardness:
The resistance of a substance to being scratched. Diamond is 10 in Mohs’ scale of hardness. Tests prove that diamond is approximately five to 150 times as hard as corundum, the next hardest mineral. The variation stems not only from the differences obtained from different hardness-testing methods, but also from the fact that various directions on a given stone’s surface show a considerable variation in resistance to abrasion. The hardest direction in diamond is parallel to the faces of the octahedron.

Hearts and Arrows:
A general term when referring to diamonds with a percise and complete pattern of hearts and arrows achieved by perfect cutting proportions. A stone polished to ideal proportions with exceptional symmetry and polish which shows eight heart shapes (Pavilion) and eight arrows (Crown) when observed through a special viewer. Ideal Cut Diamond, another fancy schmancy trade term for exceptionally idea cut diamond... The fact is that these exist within the standard diamond offerings, and are fairly and readily available in today's market without the outrageous premiums that others are charging... When you hit the certificate math and start to understand the range for ideal these fancy schmansy sweetheart trade terms do not yield more brilliance, just a selling point to use as a tool. Ideal is also not paying too much for a name, be it a store name or trade term. We understand this is an emotional time, and you want the very best, but we won't use that to up-sell you into a set of specs you'd need an electron microscope to appreciate {Grin}... retailers will, I will not. ...background music fade and shadow people vanish in the light... {Grin}

HRD:
Hoge Raad voor Diamant. An independent non profit institute in Antwerp for the Diamond industry. Reliable impartial Diamond certification controlled by Belgian state authorities.

Heart-shaped Brilliant:
A heart-shaped variation of the brilliant cut that is related to the pear shape. The round end is flattened and indented and the girdle widened until the length is approximately equal to the width.

Hand Engraving:
The fine european traditional style of decoration, using gravers and imparting a design to the metal's surface.

Ho Ho Wholesale:
A denigrating term used to describe the builders and the makers of this industry, individuals founded in wholesale and building fine jewelry, the people who make this industry work by keeping the horrible jewelry that the retail trade buys for reselling. I have all the respect for those guys and gals in the trade who "keep the promises"... Vast difference between retail and wholesale, and not just the markups either, but in the basic way of doing volume business, with a great repeat clientele. Perhaps it's just the nervous reaction to a new way of doing business, but regardless of the intent, it's a lovely way to point out the vast differences between Retail and Wholesale Direct. In summary, wholesale is the condition before the 300% markups, radio ad jingles and stupid ads in the paper.
